CASE 07 โ THE EMPTY DOME
A brass nightingale automaton vanished
from the Bellweather Museum during a
private preview. Its glass dome was intact.
Your assignment
Trace the exit route, test the alibis, and
separate opportunity from actual proof.
Fictional case; all people, institutions,
records, and evidence are invented.
Blue = records; pink = contradictions;
yellow = hypotheses; green = next moves.
22 Missing Minutes
Friday, 14 November โ fictional timeline
20:42 โ Winding demonstration ends; the bird sings.
20:47 โ Ventilation alarm evacuates the east wing.
20:49 โ Covered trolley enters the service corridor.
20:53 โ Loading desk records crate CN-17 as sealed.
21:04 โ Guard discovers an empty display dome.
The theft window is 20:42โ21:04. The trolley's
movement falls inside it, but its load is unseen.
E-02 โ AN ALARM WITHOUT SMOKE
The controller logged a manual ventilation
test at 20:47, not a smoke-sensor trigger.
The originating terminal was in the office.
The test unlocked the service passage
and sent visitors to the west staircase.
No fire or mechanical fault was found.
Implication
The evacuation created a useful opening.
It does not identify who used the terminal.
CELIA VALE โ MUSEUM DIRECTOR
โI stayed with the donors from the alarm
until security gave us the all-clear.โ
Three guests remember her at 20:46.
The next time-stamped photograph places
her in the west hall at 20:56.
That leaves ten minutes unaccounted for.
Her office held the alarm terminal and
the outgoing-loan approval credentials.
An incomplete alibi is not a confession.
MOTIVE LEAD โ THE CASH CRUNCH
A trustee memo says the museum must
cover a ยฃ180,000 payment by month-end.
The nightingale is insured for ยฃ240,000.
Vale had opposed selling it publicly.
An insurance payment could relieve the
shortfall without an announced sale.
Caution
Financial pressure explains a possible
motive, not a theft or an insurance scheme.
NOOR BELL โ NIGHT GUARD
โI took the visitors west. When I returned,
the dome was down, but the bird was gone.โ
Noor holds the gallery master key.
Her radio reports the evacuation at 20:48
and a head count at 20:51.
She noticed a covered museum trolley,
not a stranger carrying an object.
Check
Does independent evidence place her west?
IVO REED โ CONSERVATOR
โI wound the bird, locked the base, and
went downstairs to wash the tools.โ
Ivo made a resin handling replica last
month. His bench holds its mould and paint.
He knows the concealed base release.
A sink-room badge event places his card
there at 20:45, but proves neither entry
by Ivo nor how long anyone stayed.
Means are clear; opportunity is unresolved.
E-04 โ THE COVERED TROLLEY
At 20:49, corridor video shows a trolley
rolling toward the loading room. A folded
black cloth hides the top shelf and load.
The operator's face is outside the frame.
One wheel judders every full rotation.
The museum's trolley T-3 has that defect.
Useful limit
This identifies a likely vehicle, not its
operator, contents, or final destination.
The Ordinary Exit
E-06 โ Outgoing crate CN-17
Manifest: โEmpty display fittings โ restoration.โ
Approved at 18:12 under Celia Vale's account.
Sealed at 20:53; collected by a booked van at 20:58.
Recipient: North Quay Restoration, Unit 6.
Registrar Ellis Dunn checked the booking number
and seal, but did not open the crate. The shipment
was scheduled before the alarm: a prepared exit,
if the bird was concealed inside.
E-08 โ THE GUARD'S ROUTE
West-stair footage shows Noor guiding
visitors at 20:48 and counting at 20:51.
A guest's video shows her there at 20:54.
A timed walk from that staircase to the
loading room takes at least four minutes.
She could not both appear at 20:51 and
personally seal CN-17 at 20:53.
Effect
Weakens the solo-guard theory. It does not
exclude earlier help or a second person.
E-09 โ THE REPLICA IS A DISTRACTION
The resin bird was found in Ivo's locked
bench drawer after the disappearance.
Its mould seam and painted eyes are plain.
The 20:42 guest recording captures song,
wing movement, and the authentic bird's
small missing feather. The replica cannot
sing or move its wings.
Effect
A substitution before the demonstration
is unlikely. Ivo's expertise still matters.
Not a Broken Dome
WORKING THEORY โ a theft disguised as routine work
The authentic bird was still present at 20:42. Someone used
the evacuation to release the display from underneath,
move the bird on trolley T-3, and load the booked crate.
No shattered glass. No forced exterior door. A normal
shipment may have carried the object past a normal check.
Reconstruct the chain
Manual alarm โ service access โ trolley โ CN-17 โ van.
The route fits the records. The operator's identity remains
unproved; neither an account name nor a motive settles it.
E-11 โ APPROVAL BEFORE THE ALARM
The loan system records approval at 18:12
from the director's office workstation.
The destination was added that afternoon.
Vale's account authorized both the new
recipient and the release of crate CN-17.
No second approver appears in the record.
Critical distinction
This is strong evidence of advance setup.
It identifies credentials and a terminal,
not necessarily the person at the keyboard.
E-12 โ THE FALSE RECIPIENT
North Quay Restoration is not
on the approved supplier list.
The genuine North Quay Workshop
says it expected no collection.
Unit 6 is a short-term storage
unit, not a conservation studio.
The booking uses a prepaid phone
and names no individual receiver.
Follow the object
Obtain the courier's signed proof
of delivery and the storage entry
record before blaming the driver.
E-13 โ THE QUIET WAY OUT
The dome lock is undamaged. Underneath,
one retaining screw bears fresh tool marks.
The base plate can be lowered once the
concealed release is disengaged.
A loose brass screw was recovered from
trolley T-3. Its size matches the fitting,
but that size is commercially common.
Next examination
Compare tool marks and trace material.
A matching size alone is not a unique match.
RIVAL THEORY โ IVO WORKED ALONE
Fits: mechanical knowledge, replica work,
and a weakly established basement alibi.
Struggles: the earlier shipment approval,
the false recipient, and the office alarm.
He would need access to Vale's workstation
or another explanation for those records.
Do not discard it yet
Test office access and credential sharing.
A neat story is not the same as a tested one.
THE HOLE IN THE DIRECTOR THEORY
Vale says her workstation was left unlocked
while staff prepared the preview. Ellis
confirms occasionally printing labels there.
No office camera covers the keyboard.
The alarm log names the terminal only.
The loan log names Vale's signed-in account.
Two records, one possible weakness
Do not count them as two independent proofs
that Vale personally performed the actions.
The Seal That Lied
E-15 โ Same crate, different security seal
An 18:30 packing photograph shows seal 8841.
Ellis's 20:53 dispatch entry records seal 8897.
The replacement came from a museum supply roll.
Ellis says Vale explained that a damaged strap had
required resealing. No damage report was filed.
The crate was reopened or its seal was replaced.
That supports an insertion opportunity, not proof
that the nightingale was actually inside.
FIRST MOVE โ FREEZE THE RECORD- Preserve original camera and guest files.
- Export alarm, badge, and loan audit logs.
- Photograph the base before dismantling.
- Secure trolley T-3 and the loose screw.
- Retain both seal records and the supply roll.
Record collector, time, location, transfers,
and every examination for each exhibit.
Keep originals unchanged. Work from
copies; record any clock offsets separately.
INTERVIEW ORDER โ FACTS BEFORE THEORY
Ellis: Who handed over the crate? Who
changed its seal? What did Vale say, exactly?
Noor: Where did the trolley come from?
Was the operator visible, or only the cloth?
Ivo: Who knew the release mechanism?
Who used the office or borrowed his tools?
Vale: Explain the recipient, the seal,
and the gap between 20:46 and 20:56.
Ask for free accounts before showing logs.
THREE TESTS THAT COULD BREAK THE CASE
1 โ Synchronize the clocks
Compare video, controller, and dispatch time.
The 20:49-to-20:53 transfer must be possible.
2 โ Attribute the preparation
Link the storage booking and recipient edit
to a person through independent records.
3 โ Locate the cargo
Find CN-17 and document its seal and contents.
Recovery would test the proposed exit route.
A failed test must change the theory.
WORKING ASSESSMENT โ NOT A VERDICT
Best-supported route
An inside removal during the manual alarm,
followed by concealment in a normal dispatch.
Leading investigative focus
Vale: approval access, an alibi gap, and the
reported explanation for the changed seal.
Still missing
Independent attribution, recovered cargo,
and a reliable identification of the operator.
Do not turn suspicion into certainty.
RECOVERY LEAD โ UNIT 6
Through authorized investigators, request
preservation of courier and storage records.
Confirm the delivery address before any visit.
If CN-17 is located, photograph its exterior,
seal number, labels, and condition before
an authorized opening with a conservator.
Identify the bird by its missing feather,
serial plate, and mechanism photographs.
Do not wind a potentially damaged object.
Success = recovery plus a defensible chain.
